Russia Develops Automated Evacuation System for High-Rise and Industrial Facilities

A new breakthrough has emerged in Russia’s field of rescue and height safety technologies — the automated evacuation device “Sapsan.” The system is designed to enhance the safety of personnel working at height on industrial and infrastructure sites.

A New Approach to Evacuation

The project received microgrant funding and successfully passed certification, confirming its compliance with national safety standards.
“Sapsan” was developed in response to modern rescue requirements, where manual descent systems are still commonly used. Such systems demand significant physical effort and often make evacuation difficult for untrained individuals.
The automated device ensures a controlled descent speed of no more than 2 meters per second, enabling safe evacuation from heights of up to 200 meters.

Safety and Autonomy

The key feature of the system is its ability to operate autonomously or under the supervision of a rescuer.
Preparation for use takes less than one minute, and the design allows for the evacuation of unconscious persons — a critical factor in industrial accidents or fire emergencies.
As a result, the device significantly reduces risks during evacuation and makes the process accessible even for untrained personnel.

Applications in Industrial Facilities

The “Sapsan” system has already been implemented at several industrial sites, wind power plants, and offshore drilling platforms.
For facilities with high-rise structures where industrial rope access is used, such technology becomes an essential component of an integrated safety system.
Automation of evacuation processes complements traditional rescue methods and opens new opportunities for training and certification standards in work-at-height safety.

Industry Significance

The development of emergency evacuation technologies is a key priority for all sectors involving work at height, energy production, and industrial operations.
Innovations like “Sapsan” demonstrate how Russian engineers are shaping a modern safety equipment market, focusing on speed, autonomy, and the human factor as the foundation of next-generation industrial safety solutions.
